Expert consensus and ownership data via FantasyPros. Rostered percentages are averaged across ESPN and Yahoo leagues; availability in your league may differ. Depth-chart order: ESPN. 25 backup entries lacked a matching current-team RB ranking and were omitted.

Which handcuff belongs on your bench?

  1. Start with your bench problem. A backup with a weekly receiving role helps differently from a player who needs an injury before he gets meaningful work.
  2. Check how the backfield actually splits carries, targets and snaps. A second-listed player can share an injury replacement role with a third-down specialist.
  3. Read both players’ status columns. An absent designation is not confirmation of health. Questionable candidates stay visible; out, doubtful, IR, PUP and suspended candidates are excluded from this active watchlist.
  4. Compare the stash against the player you would drop, your next bye week and remaining FAAB. A handcuff is useful only if the bench cost makes sense for your roster.

Insure your own starter or stash someone else’s backup?

Insuring your starter can make sense when your lineup is competitive and losing one role would leave a large hole. Stashing another team’s backup can make sense when you need upside more than protection. Neither is automatic: shallow benches make usable weekly depth valuable, and committee backfields may spread replacement work across several players.

What the table can and cannot tell you

We require a single ordered RB slot, a fresh depth chart, a matching current-team FantasyPros RB entry, and a fresh injury snapshot. Players are joined by IDs, never by similar names. Chart order starts at 1; the first-listed RB is context, not a guarantee of the next start. Overall ROS rank includes other positions, so it is not an RB-only rank or a conditional injury-upside ranking. Deeper backups can rank above second-listed backs.

Our source freshness limits at publication are 48 hours for charts and rankings and two hours for injuries. Pages rebuild periodically, so check the dates before acting. Usage pages below label the season they cover; last year’s playing time should not be treated as evidence of this year’s role.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these rankings based on the starter getting hurt?
No. The order reflects current rest-of-season PPR rankings among depth-chart backups. It does not model a hypothetical injury or guarantee replacement touches.
Should I always roster my running back’s handcuff?
No. Compare the backup’s role, your bench size, available weekly starters and the cost of dropping another player. A committee may split the work even after an injury.
