Boom-or-bust describes a high-variance player whose weekly scores swing between massive games and near-zero duds, with little in between.

Boom-or-bust

A boom-or-bust player has a high ceiling and a low floor, so any given week he might explode for 25 points or disappear for 3.

A deep-threat receiver who relies on long touchdowns is the textbook example: catch a 60-yard score and he booms; get shut out deep and he busts. These players have high ceilings but low floors, making them feast-or-famine starts that swing your weekly outcome.

Boom-or-bust players are best in formats and situations that reward upside — like best ball, when you're a heavy underdog and need a ceiling game, or as a flex dart throw. When you're favored, safer high-floor players are usually the smarter start.
